2 Things To Do After You Have Been In A Car Accident

If you have been in a car accident, there are several things that you should do as soon as possible. Doing those things will help protect you and help you in case you have to engage an attorney to help you fight your case.

Take Pictures

You don't want to rely on your memory when it comes to the damage to your car, the other party's car, or any damaged property. Right after you have been in an accident, your adrenaline is running high. That can do all kinds of things to your body, including messing with your memory. So taking pictures of all the damage can help you remember exactly what happened to what car or piece of property on the day of the accident. That can also help to make sure that other people aren't sneaking in damage that was sustained later as something that happened because of your accident. All you need to do is to grab your phone or smart device and start snapping photos. You may be able to just email them to your insurance company or attorney too, making it much easier to share your photos as necessary.

Get Witness Information

If other people have stopped after the accident and told you that they saw what happened, get their information. You want their name and a way to contact them, either by phone or email. Make sure that you give them your contact information as well. You can ask them to write down what they saw and then send it to you, that way you can provide it to your insurance company or attorney. Ask them to write it down as soon as possible. The reason to do that is that the human brain is a marvelous thing, and one of the things that it will do is to fill in the gaps. Your brain will take memories and start to fill in any incomplete things that exist. For example, if you remember that you saw a dog, but don't remember what kind of dog it was, eventually your brain may fill in that it was a brown dog. Your brain isn't trying to get you to lie, it's just part of the way it works. But if the witnesses give you their viewpoint as soon as possible, it's going to be much closer to what happened than if they told you six months later.
